CHARTER FISHING BOAT IS REPOWERED WITH PERKINS SABRE ENGINE
Ballycastle Charters has completed the refitting of its Aqua Star nine-metre
sea fishing charter boat, Lord Moyle, by repowering with a Perkins Sabre M265Ti
engine. It is teamed-up with a ZF 1.25:1 reduction gearbox to give Lord Moyle a
top speed of around 20 knots.
Ballycastle Charters is one of the most established sea angling charter
companies operating out of Ballycastle in Moyle, County Antrim, on the very
northeastern tip of Northern Ireland. The company offers day and evening fishing
trips for groups of up to 12 private individuals as well as local community and
youth groups. It also uses Lord Moyle for coastal sightseeing trips and diving.
The installation of the M265Ti followed the accidental flooding of the engine
room, when Christopher McCaughan, skipper of Lord Moyle, took the opportunity to
repower with an engine that would give the boat more speed and greater
reliability. Commenting on his decision to fit the Perkins Sabre engine, he
said: “Next to local knowledge, the difference between success and failure in
the fishing charter business is often down to the boat’s performance.” He
explained: “If you have a group of a dozen enthusiasts turn up for a day’s
fishing, the last thing they want to hear is that you have engine problems. It
is not the way to retain custom or make a decent living.”
The wastegated turbocharged, charge air cooled six-cylinder, six-litre
M265Ti
develops its maximum 265hp at a relaxed 2,500rpm. This provides Lord Moyle with
the manoeuvrability and responsive low speed handling that is essential for sea
fishing and diving. At the same time the engine has what Christopher describes
as “bags of power the moment it is needed”. Indeed, such is the increased
performance over the old 250hp engine that he is able, for the first time, to
“hunt the tuna” on the Gulf Stream in the North Channel between Rathlin Island
to Islay in the Inner Hebrides.
The repowering operation was, according to Christopher, quick and easy to
complete, the engine having been installed by local marine diesel engine
specialist and Finning (UK) dealer, David Anderson Marine Engineering. Its
compact dimensions and easy access servicing points also ensure that maintenance
is straightforward and trouble-free.
“I am a confirmed believer in quality,” concluded Christopher. “Lord Moyle is
fitted with the latest fishfinders, radar, navigation and communications
equipment. Now she has what I consider to be the best engine on the market.”
Perkins Sabre engines are available in England, Wales and Ireland exclusively
through Cannock-based Finning (UK). Elsewhere parts and service support are
available only through the Perkins distribution network that today numbers 4,000
dealers in 160 countries.
